Peggy Jean “Momma”
Born Vera Charlotte Walker October 28, 1928, somewhere between Santo and Gordon. She was the oldest of 7 children, parents Sadie and Chester Walker. She has always been known by Peggy. She was raised here in Santo, went to school in the old school, played basketball in the old gym and a member of this church. When Peggy was 16 years old, she was hired by the railroad, and trained after school at the old depot to be a telegraph operator, it was at the end of the war and men were scarce. Shortly thereafter her dad put her on the train to Kent, Texas to work. She lived with a rancher and his family, she says she played with their kids, and ate a lot of beans. From there she worked in Van Horn and then on to Monahans. There she met the “love of her life” “Lewis” they married and together they worked and raised a family of 4 kids. After 42 years with the railroad, she retired and moved home to Santo. Her and dad bought a farm and built a home. She dearly loved her family and friends. Her greatest joy was her grandchildren and we were so thankful for her and dad’s help raising our families. She loved cooking for her family. She was always kind, generous, thoughtful and thankful to the last.
Services are 10 AM Monday at First Baptist Church in Santo. Burial will follow at Bosley Cemetery.
