Wretha Grace Spurgeon

Wretha Grace Spurgeon, 93, passed away peacefully at her home in Mineral Wells, Texas, on Monday, January 27, 2025. Born in Red Spring, Texas, to Ruby and Alvie Lyon, Wretha’s life was filled with love, laughter, and devotion to her family, faith, and community.

She was reunited in heaven with her beloved husband, Samuel Spurgeon; her daughter and son-in-law Susanne and Paul Quinton; her son-in-law Don Moore, her grandchildren, Rebecca Dunivan, James Quinton, and Don Moore, Jr; her parents; her brothers, Wilmer Lyon and wife Naomi, Floyd Lyon and wife Mary, Dorman Lyon, Doug Lyon and Sheila; and her sister, Ruth Lyon and husband Raymond; her brother-in-laws Gordon Stewart and J.D. Mason; and other beloved members of the Lyon and Spurgeon families.

She is survived by her daughter, Dianne Moore; her grandchildren, Donna Merkt and husband Frank, John Moore and wife Carolynn, and Bradley Moore and wife Arlene; her great-grandchildren, Zachary Dunivan, Zoe Dunivan and husband Christian Hanson, Erick LeMaster, Isaiah Moore, Isaac Moore, Oliver Moore, and Wendal Hogan; and her great-great-grandchild, Emmalyn Hanson. She is also survived by her brother Owen Lyon and wife Monna, and her sisters, Inez Stewart, Virginia Mason, Evelene Maddux and her husband Billy; and her sister-in-law Joyce Lyon; her brother-in-law Larry Spurgeon and wife Patsy, and her sister-in-law Imogene Nimmo. Her family was her greatest joy, and she delighted in every moment spent with them.

It was at a Whitt softball game that she met Sam, a young Whitt ballplayer who once gave the opposing team a home run—an unforgettable moment that became the start of their lifelong love story. She and Sam built a life together first in Arlington, Texas, and later in Hamilton, Texas, where they worked tirelessly on their farm and dairy. In retirement, they returned home to Mineral Wells, building a home near Rock Creek Baptist Church, where they were dedicated members. She served her church faithfully for as long as she was able, continuing to watch services online.

Wretha was a woman of kindness, strength, and deep faith. A talented seamstress, Wretha took great joy in quilting, ensuring each of her children and grandchildren received a handmade quilt. A fierce competitor at games like Forty-Two and Hand and Foot, she created precious memories of love and laughter. Wretha also enjoyed cooking and baking, indulging her lifelong sweet tooth with cookies and chocolate, especially her popular sugar cookies.

Wretha was happiest when surrounded by loved ones sharing home-cooked meals, exchanging stories, or simply enjoying their company. Her warmth, unwavering love, and generous spirit will be deeply missed and forever cherished by her family, including many beloved nieces and nephews, her church friends, and countless others who shared memorable times with her.

A memorial service will be held at Rock Creek Baptist Church on February 8, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. A family meal and visitation will take place at 1:30 p.m. prior to the service.

Though she is no longer with us, Wretha’s legacy of love, faith, and family will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
