William Irven Thurmon, 91, a loving father, home provider, and Major Retired Air Force Pilot succumbed to the ravages of time on February 14, 2009. Services will be 10 AM Tuesday, February 17, 2009 in the Baum-Carlock-Bumgardner Chapel. He will be buried beside his wife of 53 years, Ella Beth at Cottage Hill Cemetery, Celina, Texas. Rev. Bobby Williams will officiate and Baum-Carlock-Bumgardner Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. He was the second son of Virgil Thurmon and Leta Sturdivant. He married Ella Beth Lee on September 19, 1943 while on active duty in Majors A. A. F. Greenville, Texas. One son, Richard I. Thurmon of Weatherford was born. He graduated from flying school with Class 43G, receiving his 2nd Lt. Commission and Silver Wings at Brooks A. A. F. on July 29, 1943. His flight instructor rating was received at Randolph A. A. F., the West Point of the Air during World War II. He was assigned to instructor pilot duty in BT 13s again at Majors A. A. F. Latter war time duty was served as Troop Train Commander riding troop trains throughout USA with full combat ready air crews. Other interesting assignments were filled by the young Captain as WWII progressed to completion. Captain Thurmon was later recalled to active duty in 1951 and flew 50 combat missions over North Korea in Douglas B 26s with a total crew of three especially trained airmen. At termination, A. F. State Side duty was available for any command that he desired, choosing A. F. Helicopter training at San Marcos, Texas. Later as a civilian, the U. S. Army established a Helicopter School at Fort Wolters. He logged on with Southern Airways, staying until it closed. After closing, Thurmon continued living on his acreage, raising hay and cattle, while also working with Civil Air Patrol young cadets. Tiring from this, he cranked up "Thurmon's Bargain Barn", selling antiques and new and used merchandise. One of his life's highlights was when he became a 50-year Master Mason. He continued through Scottish Rite to a 32 degree Mason. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law: Richard Irven and Josie Thurmon, grandson: Clinton Irven Thurmon, granddaughter: Rachel Ann Gilbreath, and 3 great-grandchildren. Now, since I am a Christian and if you have a question, please present it to "God." I will be there with Him in the Wild Blue Yonder. SALUTE! Prepared in honor of my Dear Wife, "Ella Beth".Sincerely ForeverWilliam I. Thurmon
