Roy Donald Wright

Roy Donald Wright (Don), stepped gently into heaven on March 7, 2024 at Mineral Wells Nursing and Rehab Center.  He was born December 23, 1931, in Athens Texas, the eldest son of J. Roy Wright and Hester L. Bailey Wright. 

Don attended Mineral Wells High School and has good memories as a member of the Marching Band.  He has always worked and could do almost anything.  He was a pin setter at the Baker Hotel bowling alley, worked at a dairy, dug graves, worked at the local drive in and always helped with the driving.  It was long haul driving that became his work.  Don married Betty Leatherman in 1952, until her death in 1985 and married Phyllis Shirley in 1991 until her death 2014.  He was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church, serving as a deacon, until failing health 2022.  Don truly loved to serve his Lord, and one of his favorite ways was to mow and edge the church lawn.  He also enjoyed great success at baking pies and cookies, winning ribbons all over Palo Pinto County.  He delighted in baking for church events, especially Vacation Bible School.  

Don is survived by brother Earl Wright and was preceded in death by his sister Betty Lou Spurlock. His children are Sharon Burkhalter and husband Jim, Terry Wright and wife Becky (both deceased), Jerry Staggs, deceased and wife Letta, Gary Staggs and wife Barbara, Sherry McMinn, Joe Shirley and wife Alicia, Crystal Dusza and husband Matt, and Justin Shirley, along with numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many much-loved friends.  

Visitation will be held at Baum Carlock Bumgardner, on Sunday March 10, 2024, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Funeral services are being held on March 11, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, Mineral Wells, Texas.  Interment will be at Woodland Park Cemetery.
