Michael Eugene Allen, 73, passed away peacefully on October 20, 2023 surrounded by his loving family. He was born on September 20, 1950 in Rotan, Texas.
Mike graduated from Texas Tech University in May 1973, majoring in Chemistry. While attending Tech, he met his lovely wife, Sharon, and they were married in January 1973. He was commissioned into the U.S. Air Force after graduation. Captain Mike Allen proudly served the U.S. Air Force running radar sites in several states. Mike and Sharon then moved to Lubbock, Texas, and began their family. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Mineral Wells, Texas, which they soon called their forever home.
Mike enjoyed his 17 years at Mepco/Electra, until the company (then Philips Components) closed. He went on to work in several positions within the field of chemistry, including being honored with his own patent for a material that he invented. He played and coached both baseball and softball, enjoyed golfing with his friends and his wife, and met life-long cherished friends while living in Mineral Wells. Mike dedicated 22 years to serving on the Mineral Wells City Council, 10 of those years as the proud Mayor of Mineral Wells. He was passionate about bringing Mineral Wells back to the future of its prior glory, and about animal welfare in this city.
Mike loved to travel with his wife, family, and dear friends. They have visited numerous countries, and had just returned in March from his dream trip to New Zealand and Australia, where Mike and Sharon celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. In addition to golf, Mike also enjoyed gardening, watching Jeopardy! with his family, telling his own version of “dad jokes” to all who dared to listen, and playing cards and other games. He only tolerated dominoes. He was a man of contradictions: patient with his family, but not in his golf game; a man of science fascinated by fantasy; and a lover of music that changed the lyrics to every song he sang. He never met a stranger, only a friend he had not met before.
Mike was preceded in death by his amazing parents, Eugene and Margaret Allen as well as several beloved aunts and uncles and two of his closest friends, Steve and Bob.
He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Sharon Allen, his awesome children Chris Allen and wife Jeana, and daughter Tracy Jones and husband Daniel. He was PawPaw to his four adoring grandchildren Wyatt and Zachary Allen, and Everly and Parker Jones. He is also survived by his favorite sister Patricia Russell and husband Bob Gersten, best brother Tim Allen and wife Kandee, four precious nieces and nephews, as well as one dear aunt and numerous cool cousins. Mike is also survived by many close and dear friends of over 40 years, and his persnickety rescue pup Asher.
A Rosary will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes Chapel at 5 p.m., Sunday, November 12. A Memorial Mass to remember Mike will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Mineral Wells, Texas at 10 a.m. on Monday, November 13. He will then be honored with close family and friends in a military ceremony at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that you consider a donation to one of the charities closest to Mike’s heart, including CASA Hope for Children, Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Mineral Wells, or the animal rescue charity of your choice.
Mike Allen will be dearly missed but never forgotten. His memory will continue to bless his family, encourage his friends, inspire his community, and bring a smile (or a groan) to anyone who has ever heard his jokes.
