Joseph Earl Atkinson

Joseph Earl Atkinson, 91, passed away August 28, 2009 at his home in Mineral Wells. He was born January 17, 1918 in Rolla, North Dakota the son of Frank and Catherine Sweeney. He married Frances Genevieve Sorensen on June 21, 1945 in El Paso. He was a longtime resident of Mineral Wells and a member of First Baptist Church. He was a retired Major of the US Army having served in WWII and the Korean War. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, Retired Officers Association, and a longtime member of the Golden Ages Bowling League. He was past manager of Weatherford Country Club and Coors Distributing in Mineral Wells. He was an avid fisherman, and a loving father and grandfather. Graveside services will be 10 AM Tuesday, September 1, 2009 at Woodland Park Cemetery. He is survived by his daughter: Sharron Spence of Powder Springs, Georgia, son: Thomas Atkinson of Mineral Wells, daughter: Debra Reedy of Mineral Wells, grandchildren and spouses: Randy and Lisa Spence, Russ Spence, Rusty and Amy Reedy, Michael and Ashley Reedy, Ian Reedy, numerous great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, sisters-in-law: Alice Stallings of Mineral Wells, Virginia Sorensen of Garland, and Betty Sorensen of Waco. He was preceded in death by his wife on December 31, 2004.
