With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of John David Coats, a cherished educator and beloved teacher, who peacefully departed from this world on February 18, 2024, at the age of 78. Born on May 23, 1945, in Lubbock, Texas, to Birdie C Coats and Ruth Knight Coats, John was the youngest of six children, blessed with a loving family who nurtured his spirit and shaped his journey through life.
John's passion for education was evident throughout his life, as he dedicated himself to shaping the minds and hearts of countless students. His impact as a teacher extended far beyond the classroom, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
In addition to his dedication to education, John was a devoted family man who cherished his role as a father and grandfather. He leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories that will forever be treasured by his daughters, Jennifer Coats Greer (Russell) and Jaymie Denise Moore (Denny), as well as his grandchildren: Ryan B Greer (Elizabeth), Jobie M Greer (Kate), Leiloni J Greer, Josiah M Greer, Noah D Hernandez, Riley T Hernandez, and Jaylyn D Hernandez.
John is survived by his brother, Charles B Coats, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins, all of whom held a special place in his heart. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sherry L Coats, his parents, Birdie C Coats and Ruth Knight Coats, and his sisters: Ethel Coleman, Gail Payne, Elizabeth Perser, and Nancy Swanner.
A celebration of John's remarkable life will be held on February 23, 2024, at 2:00 PM at Southside Church of Christ in Mineral Wells, Texas, where friends and loved ones will gather to honor his memory and pay tribute to his legacy of love and learning. Following the service, John will be laid to rest in Lubbock, Texas, at the City of Lubbock Cemetery on February 24, 2024, at 2:00 PM.
Though he may be gone from our sight, John's spirit will live on in the hearts of all who were touched by his kindness, wisdom, and unwavering love. May he rest in eternal peace, reunited once again with his beloved wife, Sherry, in the arms of the divine.
