Joe (Reuben) Yancy Smith

October 19, 1937 — October 18, 2024

Joe Smith, age 86, passed away peacefully in his sleep on October 18, 2024 at Settlers Ridge Care Center in Celina, Texas, at approximately 4:50am. Joe was born in Mineral Wells, Texas on October 19, 1937 to Omar and Lois Smith. He was raised in Mineral Wells with his younger brother James and was known by his nickname Reuben. He graduated from Mineral Wells High School in 1956. During high school he worked at JC Penny’s where he met a girl named Bobbie that caught his eye. He asked her out several times without success until she finally agreed if he would take her to church, thinking he wouldn’t show. But Joe called her bluff and showed up Sunday morning in his 1946 Ford, without a hood that could be heard coming from a mile away, to pick her up. On May 17, 1958 he married the love of his life, Bobbie Gwendolyn Warren of Mineral Wells. They had one son, Michael Yan Smith, in 1964. They remained in Mineral Wells until 1966 when they relocated to Richardson, TX where they lived for a few years until they relocated again to Irving, TX where they remained until her death in March of 2024.

Joe worked for the Malsby Creamery in Mineral Wells after high school and then Boswell’s Milk Co. in Ft. Worth. He also attended Weatherford College where he studied accounting.

Joe then took a job at Texas Power & Light in Mineral Wells where he started as a clerk at the counter. He also read meters and worked in the billing department. Joe transferred to the TP&L office in Richardson as a Clerk II and then transferred again to the TP&L office in Irving where he worked in accounting. He was then given the opportunity to run a new service warehouse built in the middle of the mesquite trees north of Irving that would become Las Colinas to serve a new airport called DFW International. It was a big job and he did it well, retiring after 31 years of service as the Accounting & Stores Supervisor for the Irving District.

Joe was a good man with a strong work ethic. He served his church and community in numerous ways. He was a good and loving father to his son. He loved his daughter-in-law Candi and absolutely adored his only grandchild, Tessa! But more than anything he loved the Lord and his wife of 65 years, Bobbie.

Joe is survived by his son, Mike Smith and wife Candi and his granddaughter, Tessa Smith.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, his brother James Smith, and his wife Bobbie.
