James Edward Slattery, AKA Jimmy Nice Guy, age 88, passed away unexpectedly on October 21, 2024, at this home. Jim was born December 1, 1935, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin to James Hobart and Helen Rabideaux Slattery.
Jim moved to the western New York area at the age of twelve. He met Ellen “Sis” Beyea, and they married October 6, 1956. Jim had seven children Kathleen, James Jr., Susan, Maureen, Ellen, John, and Daniel. In 1974, the family moved to Mineral Wells, Texas.
Jim had quite a life, he was a bull rider, steer wrestler, construction worker, and steel worker. After an accident on the job, he began a new chapter in education. He attended Weatherford Junior College where he and his son, Jim Jr., were the first father and son to graduate at the same time. Jim then attended Tarleton State University graduating with a master’s degree. He became a teacher at both colleges. Other jobs included youth counselor, Street Superintendent for the City of Mineral Wells, jailer for the Palo Pinto County Sheriff's Department, and case manager for the State of Texas.
Jim was an avid sports fan, but his favorites were of course the Buffalo Sabres and the Buffalo Bills. He made sure to recognize local high school athletes through “Athlete of the Week”.
Jim was active with Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church having served as a Lay Minister and a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Jim was a proud Army veteran who served in the Korean war.
Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Ellen, sons John, Daniel, and James Jr., and grandson Beau Pate. Jim leaves behind his daughters Kathleen Seekings, Susan Brewster, Maureen Harrison (husband Jeff) and Ellen Edwards. Jim is also survived by fifteen grandchildren, twenty-one great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and a special friend Lori Ramos.
The pallbearers will be grandsons Sam Slattery, David Harrison, James Hodges, Sonny Slattery and great grandsons Timothy Bitolas and Jayden Risk.
Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Sunday, October 27, 2024, at Baum Carlock Bumgardner Funeral Home, 302 West Hubbard, Mineral Wells, Texas. The rosary and funeral mass will begin at 9:30 am on Monday October 28, 2024.
