James Stephen Self, loving father and grandfather, passed away Saturday, September 29, 2018, in Mineral Wells, at the age of 65.Jimmy was born on November 16, 1952, in Stamford, Texas, to Ish and Mozelle Self. He had one older sister, Jerry McMeans, and a beloved twin brother Alvin Self.Jimmy graduated from Irving High School in 1971. He was a proud member of the Irving High School Tigers football team. He loved reminiscing about his football days and shared many a tail of his youth. After high school, Jimmy began his long career as a dragline operator for the family business, County Line Sand & Gravel. After retiring he pursued many other career paths. He was a car salesman for many years, but his true passion was photography. He was rarely seen without his camera. He especially loved capturing his family.Jim was an avid golfer, and he loved playing the Thursday evening scrambles at Holiday Hills Country Club. He played golf on many courses throughout the United States, but his favorite courses were in Hawaii. He also loved to travel.Jim was a voracious storyteller and remembered details clearly. He loved to share stories of his youth, as well as adulthood adventures, with his children and grandchildren. He passed down many stories he thought should be remembered by the next generation. He loved family more than anything. His favorite event of the year was the big breakfast on Christmas morning with his grandchildren.Jimmy was married to Patsy Horne in 1972. They divorced in 1990, but they remained lifelong close friends. He is survived by three daughters, Ellie Starr and husband, Richard of Mineral Wells, Candice Self and spouse Imran Bhutto of Mineral Wells, and Angie Self Anderson; seven grandchildren, Lindsay Starr, William Starr, Carly Anderson, Dakota Anderson, Tyler Anderson, Katherine Carter and Liliana Bemko; great grandchild,Levi Anderson; sister-in-law Debbie Self; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Ish and Mozelle Self; sister, Jerry McMeans; brother, Alvin Self; and great-nephew, Trey Tisdale.The family would like to send a special thank you to the nurses and staff at Mineral Wells Nursing and Rehab who have taken such good care of him since 2013.Services will be held on Tuesday, October 2, 2019, at First Baptist Church of Mineral Wells at 10:00am. Viewing service will be held on Monday, October 1, 2019, at Baum-Carlock-Bumgardner Funeral Home from 6:00pm-8:00pm.
