Harold Gene Phillips was born August 14, 1928 in Ashdown Arkansas to Effie and Ivy Phillips, and he died on March 7, 2016 in Azle, Texas. As one of ten children, he developed a strong work ethic contributing to the family's livelihood on the farm. This served him well as he moved beyond Little River County and began his own career. While working in west Texas, he met Ramie Mae Curbo, and they married on May 16, 1950. They lived in a variety of places while raising a young family but settled in Mineral Wells in 1974 where he was the drilling superintendent for Northridge Oil Company. Although Gene's skills were centered in the oil industry, he was always willing to explore new ways to invest his talents and support his family. Twice this drive led him to positions with companies contracting with the government. During the early seventies, he worked for Fenix Sessions as a member of one of the initial teams testing the atomic bomb in the Nevada dessert. Before retiring in 1994, he spent the last decade of his career working for General Dynamics in Fort Worth. Even in retirement, he found great satisfaction through building and managing his second hand store from his home. Through his professional and personal pursuits, one of his distinguishing characteristics was his ability to develop and maintain relationships. Of course, the most profound extension of this was his commitment to his family as a loving husband, father, and brother. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ramie, son, James F. Phillips, seven brothers, and one sister. Survivors include son, Stanley Gene Phillips and wife Judyth;. daughter, Judy Beth Phillips; granddaughters, Crystelle Phillips and daughter Elizabeth, Erin Phillips, and Shaina Phillips Davis and husband John, all of Mineral Wells; one sister, Gwen Adcock of Durango, Colorado; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. Services will be 10 AM Friday, March 11, 2016 at First Baptist Church in Mineral Wells with William Eudy officiating. The family will be receiving visitors on Thursday from 6-8 PM at Baum-Carlock and Bumgardner Funeral Home. For those who wish to honor Gene's memory is another way than flowers, the family suggests a contribution to Sherwood & Myrtie Foster's Home for Children at P. O. Box 978, Stephenville, TX 76401.
