Freda Lea Higgins

Freda Lea Ware Gatewood Wolford Higgins, lovingly known as Freda Lea Ware, passed away on July 7, 2024, at the age of 80 in Mineral Wells, Texas. Born on August 28, 1943, in Amarillo, Texas, Freda’s life was marked by her vibrant personality and her dedication to her family.

Freda’s career spanned various roles, from a Go Go dancer to a waitress, but she was most proud of her role as a mother, a title she cherished deeply. Her lively spirit extended into her personal interests as well; she was passionate about camping, fishing, dancing, playing pool, and spending quality time with her family. Music was also a significant part of her life, providing a soundtrack to her most cherished moments. She was also well known for her famous sweet tea, no less than 2 cups of sugar would do. She was tiny but fierce and we could all solve our problems at the square round table (if you know, you know) where she always had a pot of coffee ready any time of day.

She leaves behind a legacy of love and vibrant memories with her children, Cathy Gatewood Montgomery DeBoard and husband Dale, Keith Gatewood and wife Shawn, and Rhonda Wolford. Freda was a proud grandmother to Cody Montgomery, Travis Montgomery and wife Julie, Tasha Tasha Gateway, Bubba Gatewood and wife Ryan, Florence Norman, J.J. Hall and wife Tara, Lacey Follbaum and husband Clay, and Layton Williams. Her great-grandchildren, Brayden, Harrison, Everly, Bryleigh, Clayton Thomas, Tatum, LynnLea, Ellie, Lylah, Payton, Paisley, and Emersyn, will also hold her dear in their memories.

Freda was preceded in death by her son Walter Lee “Skeeter” Wolford, husbands Walter Kenneth “Kojak” Wolford, Leon Gatewood, and David “Doc” Higgins, as well as her mother Annie Dee Hughes Ware Rodgers, father, Lawrence Ware, and siblings Donna Welborn, Jimmy Ware, R.L. Foster, RC Lyon, Frank McDole, and nephew Andy Harmon. She is survived by her twin sister Frances Foster, sisters Sally McDole, and Patsy Lyon, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and friends who felt like family.

A memorial service will be held 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, September 28, 2024 at 2412 Fillmore St, Wichita Falls, Tx. All family and friends are invited.

Baum Carlock Funeral Home in Mineral Wells, Texas is assisting the family during this time. Freda’s life was a dance of joy, love, and resilience, and she will be profoundly missed by all who knew her.
