Floyd Alvie Lyon

Floyd Alvie "Buddy" Lyon, beloved husband, dad and papa, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2014.Service is 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 19, at Salesville Baptist Church with Brother LonnieDeArmond officiating. Interment will take place after the service at Salesville (Grantham)Cemetery.Floyd and Mary Lyon celebrated 68 wonderful years together on Feb. 3, 2014. Floyd Alvie Lyon andMary Catherine Davis met in the big city of Red Springs, Texas, in 1943. After several months ofdating, Floyd was drafted into the service of the Army. Floyd had basic training at Camp Fanning,Tyler, Texas. After basic training he came home on leave and asked Mary to marry him, and ofcourse she said "yes" because they were very much in love. Floyd was then sent overseas to Germany to serve under General Patton in the 3rd Army. General Patton would often say to Floyd "Come on Tex". After the war was over, Floyd came home Dec. 20, 1945, on leave and Mary and Floyd planned their wedding.Feb. 3, 1946, they were married in Mary's grandparents' home (Mr. and Mrs. D.W. Davis). Floyd had to leave for Camp Crowder, Mo., the night of their honeymoon. She returned to stay with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. H.W. Davis because he was sent to Camp Polk, La., to serve until he was discharged severalmonths later. After Floyd was discharged, they bought a farm southwest of Red Springs. Their first son,James Alvie, was born Feb. 12, 1947. Their second son, Douglas Wayne, was born Aug. 29, 1948,and died Aug. 30, 1948. Their third child, a daughter, Shirley Jean, was born March 8, 1950.Shortly after her birth, they moved to Mineral Wells and they had their fourth child, John Roy, born Nov. 18, 1954. Their last child, Cathy Elaine, was born April 14, 1956. All of their children were raised in the country in the house built by Floyd, about 6 miles north of Mineral Wells.Floyd worked as a mechanic for Emmett Maddux, the Chrysler place and Ed Lee Chevrolet for several years. In 1969, Floyd and Mary and their two sons, James and John, went into their own business (Lyon's Garage). They also employed Wayne Glover. After 12 successful years, they retired and Floyd continued working the business at his home for eight years in their garage. Floyd's total working years as an auto mechanic was over 40 years. Floyd and Mary also had a successful business in rental property for many years.Floyd grew up with nine brothers and sisters and Mary grew up with eight brothers and sisters. He was a member of the Palo Pinto County Sheriff's Posse for many years. Since Jan. 20, 1991, Floyd has served as a deacon at Salesville Baptist Church. Floyd and Mary enjoyed being retired and doing the things that made them happy, like being with friends and family.They have five grandchildren, Teddy, Chuck, Shawnta, Tiffany and Nicole (deceased); 10great-grandchildren, Paige, Douglas, Tyler, Clarissa, Ryan, Zachary, Tabatha, Chloe, Hopeand Grace; and one great-great-grandchild, Bentley. They are very proud of each and everyone of them.When asked what the secret to being happily married for 68 years was, Mary replied, "Love eachother, talk things over before you do something, do for each other, be there for each other and with the Good Lord's help."Floyd replied, "We knew the first time we met each other that we were meant for each other." He also said, "Don't ever go to bed mad, always forgive each other before going to bed. I thank the GoodLord we still have each other."Floyd and Mary said they were very proud of all of their children and could not continue to be in their country home without each and every one of them. >From their youngest daughter, Cathy: "My parentsboth have great wisdom; I still go to both of them for advice and their great knowledge. I'm proud to be their daughter and love them very much. The rest of the Lyon's Den feel the same way."Surviving loved ones include his wife of 68 years, Mary Catherine Lyon; sons, James and wife Sandra Lyon, and John and wife Wanda Lyon; daughters, Shirley Ray and Cathy and husband Robert Wilkerson; sisters, Inez and husband Gordon Stewart, Wretha, Virginia and husband Derl Mason andEvelene and husband Billy Maddux; brothers, Dorman and wife Joyce Lyon and Owen andMona Lyon; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends.Gone to heaven before Floyd are parents Alvie Ulus (Bud) and Ruby Lyon; siblings, Wilmar Lyon, RuthGlover and Doug Lyon; brother-in-law, Sam Spurgeon, husband of Wretha Spurgeon; sister-in-law,Naomi Lyon, wife of brother Wilmar Lyon; son, Douglas Wayne Lyon; and granddaughter,Nicole Ray and son-in-law Rudy Ray and daughter-in-law Susie Lyon.
