Bruce Smith

Bruce J. Smith (Smitty), 72, passed away April 25, 2009 at Huguley hospital in Burleson. He was born September 14, 1936 in Bismarck, North Dakota the son of Roy and Marjorie Doll Smith. He graduated from St. Mary's High School in Bismarck. He enlisted in the US Army after graduation. He worked his way through the ranks and went to Warrant Officers School. He served tours in Korea, Germany, and two tours in Vietnam. He was a Chinook pilot in Vietnam. When he retired his rank was Chief Warrant Officer 3. He attended Texas Christian University and received his Bachelor of Science in Nursing. He worked at Palo Pinto General Hospital, Pecan Valley M. H. M. R. for 13 years and then retired again. He belonged to the V. F. W. Post 2339, American Legion Post 75, and the Pilot Association. He was actively involved in the National Vietnam War Museum. Bruce (Smitty) and Mary built their dream home which they enjoyed together for 11 years. Memorial services will be 2 PM Tuesday, April 28, 2009 in the Baum-Carlock-Bumgardner Chapel with Rev. Bobby Williams officiating. He is survived by his wife: Mary Smith, sons: Stephan Smith, Marvin Butterfield, daughters and sons-in-law: Theresa Butterfield, Pam and Mike Franklin, Kelly and Mike Harbour, 10 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, mother: Marjorie Smith, 3 brothers, and 1 sister. He was preceded in death by his father: Roy Smith, son: Kevin Smith, daughters: Virginia (Butterfield) Sires, Kathleen Smith, and brother: Donald Smith. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in memory of Bruce James Smith (Smitty) to The National Vietnam War Museum at PO Box 146, Mineral Wells, Texas 76068-0146.
